Why Your AC Isn’t Cooling Your Home in Tampa, FL
Running your AC all day in Tampa and still sweating at 77 degrees is one of the most frustrating situations a Florida homeowner faces. The good news: most cases have a specific, diagnosable cause. The bad news: ignoring them turns a $150 repair into a $3,000 compressor replacement.
Here are the five most common reasons your AC runs but won’t cool, what each one means, and when you need a professional.
1. A Dirty or Clogged Air Filter
This is the single most common cause of reduced cooling in Florida homes, and it costs you nothing to fix. When your filter is packed with dust and debris, airflow drops. Less air moving over the evaporator coil means less heat gets pulled out of your home. On humid Florida days, this can also cause the coil to freeze over, which makes the problem dramatically worse.
Check your filter first. If it’s grey and visibly clogged, replace it with a Merv-8 or higher. Filters in Florida should be checked every 30 days during heavy-use months (May through October), not quarterly like most manufacturer guides suggest. 2. Low Refrigerant from a Leak

3. A Frozen Evaporator Coil

To confirm: feel the copper line running into your air handler. If it’s coated in ice or frost, you have a frozen coil. Turn the system to fan-only (no cooling) for 2 to 4 hours to let it thaw, then replace the filter. If it freezes again after thawing, the underlying cause — low airflow or low refrigerant — hasn’t been fixed, and you need a technician.
4. A Failing Compressor
The compressor is the engine of your AC system. It pressurizes the refrigerant and drives the entire cooling cycle. A failing compressor often still runs — the system comes on, the outside unit hums — but it doesn’t build enough pressure to actually move heat out of your home.
This is the most expensive single component in your system. A compressor replacement runs $1,200 to $2,500 depending on the system.
